OPINION: A Theoretical Perspective On Those Who “Killed” The godfather, by John Mayaki

Africans have a way, culturally, of mesmerizing, ridiculing and repudiating their illustrious ones while alive but would regrettably, share crocodile’s tears at their gravesides after the sting of death – this is especially so, when they are far removed or hold divergent sociopolitical ideological coloration.

The political party, for instance, that campaigned against the godfather’s ‘godfatherism’ is said to have, in the spirit of reconciliation, offered to arrange a state burial for the ‘godfather’, after some crunchy-worded press statements on his demise and not without some injections of ‘dubious’ adjectives some ‘double-faced’ leaders are known for – ‘he was a democrat of the finest order’, ‘he endorsed my candidature’, ‘he was a political colossus’, ‘he was Nigeria’s political pathfinder’, among other spine-chilling and vain-glorious hypocritically enticing words.

When I heard of the demise of the godfather, and the expected heartfelt condolences that followed and still pouring in, it reminded me of the illusions of life, the fakeness of men and the transientness of power – life without infrastructural value.

But wait a minute. Although, I might embark on a futile academic exercise to ponder on the following questions as traditional pathologists would demand – who killed the ‘godfather’? Are there new entrants of neurotypical ‘godfathers’ in whose repugnant party, the necessity of WAEC certificates are waved off or, if need be, reawarded with presidential fanfare after some decades?

How brief or protracted was the illness that sized the humble and harmless ‘godfather?’ When last did we, especially those who mourned on the pages of the newspapers and social media, visited or checked-up on him before his glorious departure to the great beyond?

On the political flank, questions such as; who petitioned the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to way-lay the ‘godfather’ over accusations of corruption, so as to disgrace him? Who championed and co-joined in the compulsory political campaign orchestrated to forcefully retire the ‘godfather’, even when he was not yet tired? What is the degree of impact, albeit, negatively, of all these malicious diatribe on the mental psychology of this soft target, and in relation to his death – contributory effects?

Isn’t it better for the ‘godfather’, who, like Methuselah, to die, without imputing upon us, a deluge of guilts? Or did the ‘godfathers’ transmutation merely reenacted and reactivated a more anti-objective political ‘godfathers’ as against the PDP ‘godfather’ who generously, as we are meant to believe ‘endorsed APC Chairmanship candidate’ in the polity? Could this also be a case of an emerging godfather’s beneficiary of the typical godfathers’ benevolence?

Howbeit, this is not the death of the ‘godfather’, or if it is, it is certainly not the theoretical death of godfatherism or of ‘Mr. Fix-It’ but the renewal and rebirth of a better constructed neurotypical ‘godfathers’ – in various sizes – characterized by subversive possibilities that is capable of scandalizing and eroding the noble values of the better constructed ‘godfather’ even in his grave, since we so much loathe him but love to surpass the accusations we all imprinted on him while alive.

Excepting that, you all, especially the guilty leaders, will intrinsically, and in all honesty agree to purge yourselves of the unfair treatments you collectively and individually meted on the ‘godfather’, in order to embrace and agree that those condolences were genuine and honest as against the sheer authoritianistic and neo-fascist wind blowing all over the country especially in the art of the Nigerian political governmentality.

As pessimistic as I have recently become on issues bordering on democracy, good governance, transparency, accountability, One-Man, One-Vote, among other idealistic post-modernistic constructions, I am all the more very certain, however subjective, that a chunk of so-called pro-democracy leaders have never being true democrats in the real sense of the word – they have since dwarfed the innocent ‘godfather,’ whose shoe, they now fitly wear, and therefore reaffirming the theory that, although, the ‘godfather’ may have given way, howbeit, the masses are treated to a somewhat nihilistic others to confirm to us that our sufferings had just begun – as we usher in the fascists as ‘godfathers’ who now live with us and even in us all.

My consolation therefore would be that, albeit, Chief Tony Anenih – the role-model – of blessed memory is better, credible and greater than the present nihilists as ‘godfathers’ that our leaders have assumed in the recent post-PDP era and neo-APC realism.
