Delta NLC To Gov. Okowa –Look Into Issues Of Unpaid Salaries Arrears Of LGAs Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Delta state chapter has called on the state government to look into the issue of unpaid salaries of local Government Civil Servants in the state.

In an telephone interview with Trace reporter, the Delta State NLC Chairman Comrade Jonathan Jemiriyiegbe said before now, the Local Government workers were being owed eleven months salaries but has been reduced to five months in some Local Government Areas.

Comrade Jonathan said that it was quite sad that the LGA civil servants salaries have not been regular.

He pleaded with the state government to address the issue of prompt payment of salaries and other entitlement to Local Government workers.

On the relationship between the Government and NLC in the state, he said that Labour has enjoyed a cordial relationship with Governor Okowa.

According to him, “the Governor Okowa lead administration has been a responsible one, we always have access to him anytime we want to see him unlike other state that complain about their governor, I can tell you that we in Delta State do not have such problem of having access to him” he said.

On how real and factual about the implementation of the new minimum wage in Delta, he said that Delta state is always the first to in implementing the minimum wage throughout the country adding that the Union is proud of Senator Okowa’s lead government.

He however appealed to him the need for the state government to employ more civil servants in the state as most ministries lack workers.

In a separate interview with staff of Local Government Areas with trace reporter said that apart from Warri North, Southwest and Burutu Local Government Areas whose salaries are a bit regular, others are being owed in the minimum of five months while many others are being owed for nine to ten months.

According to the LGA staff who will not want his name mentioned, the situation is as bad as when staff that were affected could not even know how many months salaries are been owned , they said that they’ve lost count of the number of months.
