Former -Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Edo State, Barrister Henry Idahagbon, has stated that former President Olusegun Obasanjo deserves commendation and not condemnation for the letter he recently wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari.
“A lot of people have expressed umbridge for ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo’s penchant for letter writing. I recall that way back 1979-83 he wrote a similar letter to then President Shehu Shagari. So, Chief Obasanjo did not just start writing such letters.
“I think instead of criticising him Obasanjo should be commended.
“I am not a fan of Obasanjo but I think he’s playing the role that any stateman who needs development for his people should play.
“It doesn’t matter that during his time(as president) he didn’t do things perfectly. Chief Obasanjo can afford to luxuriate in the comfort that he has been able to acquire for himself and care less about whatever tough times that Nigerians may be going through.
“So, for him to be descending from that luxury to speak truth to power like he has done with this letter to Buhari, Obasanjo deserves to be commended and not to be condemned inspite of his shortcomings when he was the president.
“Let us be objective, when he was president for eight years many of us did not appreciate him. But looking back in retrospect, is there a President post Obasanjo that has performed better than he did?”
Speaking in denial of allegations that he played a prominent role in the imposition of candidates in the recent primaries of his party, the All Progressives Congress(APC), for the forthcoming local government councils polls, Barrister Idahagbon said the decision to endorse Eghe, a daughter of the late General Samuel Ogbemudia(rtd) as the Chairmanship candidate for Egor Local Government Area was informed by the decision to give a woman a chance to occupy elective position and also as a result of her father’s laudable achievements while he was governor of the old Bendel State.
“Without even engaging in too much campaign, Eghe is a sure bet to get votes from majority of the electorates on the election day,” he concluded.
