KADUNA: El- Rufai Sets To Launch Violence Against Children Programme

By Lola Seriki- Idahosa

Kaduna state government has said the state will launch its Violence Against Children Programme on 11th October, 2017, at the Umar Musa Yar’adua Indoor Sports Hall of Murtala Square.

Speaking through his commissioner of Womeen affairs and social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba disclosed this at a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat on Tuesday.

The Commissioner said the programme is aimed at sensitizing citizens on the dangers of child abuse.

According to her, Kaduna state children are being sold and some stolen for domestic servants, she added that her Ministry is handling cases of over 37 children rescued from child traffickers, and soon release them back to their parents and guidance.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba has disclosed that about thirty-seven (37) girls have been rescued from the hand of child traffickers.

According to Hajiya Hafsat Baba, people buy and sell children like groundnut, saying the State Government has concluded arrangements to launch the campaign on Violence Against Children Programme August 11, 2017.

She informed that the State government is deeply concerned about the frequent cases of violence against children across the state, adding that the decision to launch the campaign is geared towards creating awareness on the dangers of child abuse to Kaduna State, especially the less privileged in the society.

She noted that there are many incidents of child violation on her table right now and the Ministry is doing everything possible to handle them.

“Any form of violence against children should be avoided, and no rape case should be covered up by any Nigerian since it is already in the criminal act,” she added.

“Recently, we are also fighting with children been sold. People buy and sell children like groundnut, I have like about 37 children rescued, including a non-National, Ghanaian who brought 3 children, and we have collected them. Kaduna state children are been sold, so please media we need to wake up. I need to say it loud that we cannot allow our children been sold.”

“We have written to ministry of justice to do their work, as well as the security agencies who will investigate the issues, therefore, we shall continue to follow-up case and ensure that justice is served” she said.

Speaking on the mechanism put in place to stop violence against children in the State, Hajiya Hafsat Baba said Governor Nasir El-Rufai is committed and ready to ensure that once the State Assembly passed the Child Rights Act, he will sign it immediately.

The Commissioner who said any parent who molests his or his child is violating the Child Rights Act, thus should be reported to the police, enjoined parents, the media and individuals to join the government in the fight for the safety of children.

She informed that this is a wakeup call to the media, adding that the State and Nigeria cannot continue to allow our children been sold in and out of the country.

“We want everyone to join hands with government to ensure that all our children are safe. Some time ago, there was an incident where a child was molested and that child actually lost her live. Some time, this act is been perpetrated by parents, relatives, neighbors, including teachers. But most especially by those people close to you.

“As I speak, there is a girl in Gwamna Awan that was beaten and could not stand up. Just on Friday I got a text that a father killed his three year old child. And that’s always the story. That is a wakeup call for us that we should always protect our children, because we were ones children, before we became adults.

“A group of Pharmacist, SEMA, NEMA, police, immigration and among other compositions has formed a child protection network against child trafficking”.
